Darn Tough Socks Product Review

Darn Tough Socks have a lot to live up to, just from their name alone. Also, they self-describe as “The Premium All Weather Performance Sock.” Bold indeed. Darn Tough Vermont is a manufacturer of premium, all weather outdoors socks, with headquarters in Northfield, Vermont. Darn Tough Vermont offers products in six active wear categories: ski/ride, hike/trek, run/bike, lifestyle, hunt and kid’s styles. The company’s product is distinguished from industry competitors by: 100% USA manufacturing; small needle knitting which results in more stitches per inch and exceptional durability and cushioning; an exclusive blend of either Coolmax® or ultra-fine merino wool for softness, fit, durability and moisture management; and a unique unlimited lifetime guarantee policy. “What Makes ‘Em Darn Tough?

Made in Vermont   We live and work in Vermont. Our backyard is the perfect testing ground to make the finest Premium All Weather Performance Socks. We ski, snowboard, hike, bike and run in the most unforgiving climate in the lower 48. It is under these conditions that we design, test and manufacture our socks.

High Density Knitting   More knit stitches per inch equates to durability and cushioning without bulk.

Performance Fit  From form fitting toe boxes to sculpted heel pockets and knit-in elastic support at the arch, our knitting techniques produce the finest fitting performance sock available.

Merino Wool Our custom count, shrink treated Merino wool enhances the comfort and durability that outdoor enthusiasts have come to expect from this fiber.

Coolmax®  Because wool is not for everyone. We use an exclusive Coolmax® blend to create a sock with exceptional softness, durability and superior moisture management.

Full Cushion  Full Cushion socks have dense terry loops that surround the entire foot creating maximum cushioning and warmth without bulk.

Cushion  For those who prefer a sock with less cushioning. Our cushion socks have dense terry loops on the bottom of the foot producing cushioning and warmth without bulk.

Ultra-light  Flat jersey construction to meet the demands of both the shell-fit customer and the Nordic athlete.

Mesh  Open knit mesh construction is lightweight and extremely breathable. It’s one fast sock.

Ribbed Knit  Form fitting to the contours of your calf, shin and ankle ensuring a custom fit.

Ribbed Ankle Support  No Slipping. No Bunching. Helps prevent blisters.

Elastic Arch Support   Knit into the arch of all of our socks to provide added endurance.

Ring Toe Construction  Terry loops surrounding the toe create a comfortable invisible seam.”

I recently tested a pair of their Run-Bike No Show Mesh socks in Merino Wool (I think this is fast becoming my favorite endurance apparel material) in the Team DTV colors, which are a very cool color combination, though from the options, I think I’d like the Flame the best. When I received these, it was suggested that, due to the weather, these socks might be best suited for running on the treadmill or cycling inside on the trainer. While they were very comfortable for both those applications, I also used them for a few runs outside and they performed admirably then as well.

“Open mesh knitting on top of foot. Reinforced heel and toe. Elastic support around the arch. Materials: 71% Merino Wool, 27% Nylon, 2% Lycra® Spandex.”
From their Facebook Page: Mark Comcowich, the company’s Director of Sales and Marketing, points out that, “Our sole focus since Darn Tough’s founding has been to produce the best-performing socks on the market and to be intensely customer focused in achieving this goal. Thin, dense, light socks represent probably the most innovative segment of the outdoor sock industry, and the ability to add seamless technology to these products is something that our customers said they wanted. When you run your hand over where the seam should be on these new socks, you feel nothing at all. This translates into better fit, no hot spots or blisters, increased durability and optimum comfort. We’ve built our firm on listening to customers and reacting faster than our competitors. It’s a simple approach, and one that works well for us.”
These are really comfortable socks and, after multiple wearings and washings, appear to be as new. Really high quality construction, lots of options in terms of color, materials, and use make these a recommended addition to your sock collection.
