Whole30: Reintroduction

So after eliminating the iffy foods from one’s diet, you can just dive back in after the 30 days, right? A wine/pizza/chocolate cake night? Not so fast. Part of Whole30 is getting you away from that sort of celebratory dinner mindset, but it also is an examination of your body and how it reacts to the foods you’ve just eliminated for the 30 days. Enter the Reintroduction. In a controlled manner, you can start imbibing/eating what you didn’t and see how they affect you. I decided to take about a week and see how it went.

Whole30 Reintroduction

First up for me was wine. It wasn’t that tough to give up wine for the 30 days (I can quit anytime!), though there were instances where a nice glass of vino would have been welcome. So, Friday night, I drank 2 glasses of wine (actually a lot more). Saturday and Sunday were supposed to be strict Whole30, to gauge how my body felt, but that didn’t happen either.

Up next was dairy. I love me a good cheese (especially on pizza, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves), so a nice cheese plate was in order. Always better with a glass of wine, and that’s exactly how it went. Again, planned on strict Whole30 Tuesday and Wednesday, but a no-go.

Finally, gluten. Hooray bread! A burger with a pretzel roll on Thursday night (with cheese and wine, haha), then strict Whole 30 Friday and Saturday. No, that didn’t happen. Pizza Friday night with wine, pizza Saturday night with wine. Burritos with tortillas Sunday night (also with cheese and yes, wine).

Pretty much I sucked at the reintroduction, total failure. Overall I definitely felt less well, but not to the point where I feel like I could cut something out and it would be the perfect solution. For me, it’s about accountability. I love to drink wine. When I drink kit I want more, and I also want to eat. Then I make poor food choices. If I drank less, that would be optimal. Unfortunately, I’m kind of an all or nothing person, so trying to drink just a little might be tough. But it’s something to note and to work on.

Whole30 can be a new food regimen, a yearly cleanse, whatever you want. I’ll probably keep to the tenets as much as possible but not be crazy strict about it. If you’re thinking about trying Whole30, I wholeheartedly endorse it – it’s not that tough and the positives far outweigh any of the perceived hardships.
