“FROM HERE TO DISAPPEAR
Feel your run, not your shoes”
Check out the vibrant sole colors!
The Wave Rider 17 is the update from Mizuno on their flagship shoe, which is designed for the neutral runner who needs support and cushioning for high mileage training. Key features include their U4ic midsole for lightweight, resilient cushioning; an extremely light, “dissolving” upper fit; their SmoothRide Engineering for a brilliant run; Lateral Forefoot Sculpting for smooth touchdown and transition, with deep flex grooves for optimal flexibility and cushioning. According to Mizuno, the heel to toe drop is 12 mm.
I ran in the Wave Rider 17s on pretty much every surface (sidewalk, street, gravel, dirt, grass) and they handled all with aplomb. Initially the sole felt quite stiff, but had already started to soften by the end of the first run. While Mizuno’s aim is to have the shoe “disappear,” there was actually a pleasant springiness initially — I almost felt like the shoes were pushing off for me. One negative: to me, the arch area feels a bit narrow, but with some judicious lacing changes they felt all right. Otherwise the shoe had plenty of room in the toe box, felt secure on the heels, and was quite a bit lighter than other shoes I’ve run in.
The red elements on the upper are gone, and the sole is more vibrant in the actual shoe
The design on the pair I received is an interesting one, in that the upper is quite simple, mostly white mesh, with some black, grey, and red elements and bright red laces for contrast (with amazingly blue aglets for further fun). The sole, by contrast, looks like your kids’ LEGO box, bright colors in disparate blocks. I prefer the Dark Slate-Bright Marigold-Columbia upper version better, but the soles on the pair I received bring a smile to my face every time I see them.
If you’re in the market for a neutral trainer with some support and cushioning to give you the option to run far, take a look at the Wave Rider 17s, they might be the shoe you’re looking for.
The Wave Rider 17 launches tomorrow, December 5th!
