My two younger ones LOVE walkie talkies (and so do I). We’ve had a variety of them over the years and were happy to play with them, but never found ones that were ideal. The Motorola Talkabout T460 might be the best affordable (MSRP: $89.99) radios we’ve found, really nothing wrong with them that we could find.
Weather resistant, fall compatible (yes, we’ve dropped them a few times), and relatively light and compact (our 5 year old is comfortable holding one), this walkie talkie boasts many fine features. Push-to-Talk, Emergency button, a flashlight (a flashlight!), weather feature, and an optional earpiece port make these all you need.
With a range of up to 35 miles (according to the manufacturer and under ideal conditions), these radios do pretty well even in our suburban environment. While a few miles or more are easily attained in a forest preserve or state park, we expected (and received) much less distance in our suburban neighborhood. Not a surprise with all the electronic static in the air, just good to know. Around the house, the boys had no problems communicating as they played a variety of games. Indoor to outdoor was no problem either.
Probably the most impressive thing for us was the extended battery life. We’ve had walkie talkies that seemed to burn through power even if we kept them turned off for extended periods of time. We didn’t do any formal testing, but it seemed like we got hours off a single charge, being careful to turn off the radios between uses. Part of this is that the T460 consumes only half watt of power during its idle condition. I’m a fan of rechargeable gear, so the Mini-USB Charging Port works perfectly for us, though you can also use 3 regular AA batteries if recharging is not an option.
Just launched in June, these radios should be on both your wish and present-giving lists. Beyond having fun adventuring right at home (as my boys and I did), these two-way communicators give you reliable communication while hiking, camping, paddling where cell service is spotty or non-existent.
