New Buffalo Sailing Excursions

Our family loves the water and now that I’m living on the shore of Lake Michigan, we are expanding our repertoire. Recently we headed out on the lake with New Buffalo Sailing Excursions.

Sailing is a fickle activity, heavily dependent on weather. We had good strong winds but also a lot of 3-4 foot swells. This made for a fun ride, but had my youngest apprehensive. If you’ve never been on a boat heeling (leaning) over at 30 degrees or maybe more, it’s unnerving.

New Buffalo Sailing offers 2 hour cruises from their base in New Buffalo, MI. The 31 foot boat accommodates 6 people (plus the captain) comfortably. BYOB is permitted, and water and soda are provided.

Guests can bring along their own CDs to play on the boat’s sound system, though we opted for the captain’s sailing playlist, which fit the day perfectly.

Since the water was so choppy, the captain didn’t allow us to go swimming off the boat, which is one of life’s pleasures, so we’ll need to get back out another time for that.

We motored out of the harbor, hoisted the sails, and we were off. Out we want and then turned back in to sail along the coast for a while. It’s great to see a familiar scene from a different perspective.

Each of the kids took their turn at the helm, either under sail or while motoring, and that was a guarantee that they had a great time.

Sailing is an experience that everyone should have. While it’s quite expensive to own a boat, it’s not the only way to get out on the water. An outing like this is a worthwhile luxury.

I’d suggest looking for the Groupon offer, as it saves some money that can then be spent on snacks and drinks to bring along. Plan ahead for this, as the sailing is offered only from May 25th through September 23rd.
