Pure Bar: Product Review + Giveaway

Veronica Bosgraff’s daughter was 6 when she told her mother she wanted to be vegetarian. Veronica noticed that there clearly was a lack of healthy vegetarian snacks in grocery stores, and decided to create one of her own. The requirements were stiff. Only use real ingredients, organic fruits and healthy nuts untouched by harmful herbicides and pesticides. No refined sugars, no chemicals, no genetically-modified stuff. We wanted ingredients rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and omega-3 fats. Most importantly, it had to taste amazing.

Pure Bar is committed to using its products and practices as vehicles for change. As a brand started by a woman to empower her daughter to pursue a healthy active lifestyle, they are committed to overall wellness. Pure is dedicated to enabling young men & women to realize their potential and provide them with the tools that can inspire them to have a lasting positive impact in their communities. Additionally, they hope to encourage these same young men and women to adopt a more healthy, active lifestyle.

Our tasting sheet

Tasting Notes:

  • Cranberry Orange
    • Kovas – very strong orange flavor; minimal cranberry; crunchy, chewy nut element
    • Laima – very orangey; not too sweet; crunchy and chewy
  • Apple Cinnamon
    • Kovas – good cinnamon smell; great texture and taste; stronger of cinnamon taste, but balanced by apple
    • Laima – cinnamony apples; chewy with bits of apple; also not too sweet
  • Trail Mix
    • Kovas – strong sunflower and chocolate flavor; tastes just like its name!
    • Laima – tastes like a handful of trail mix!
  • Cherry Cashew
    • Kovas – least scented; tarter cherries balance cashew; overall subtle flavor; good texture with crunchiness of nuts; my favorite flavor by far!
    • Laima – nutty; tart cherries; not too sweet
  • Wild Blueberry
    • Kovas – strong blueberry flavor and small; good texture with nutty crunch; strange aftertaste
    • Laima – strong blueberry scent; strange aftertaste; sweeter
  • Chocolate Brownie
    • Kovas – good cocoa smell; least amount of nut texture of all bars; unlike a typical chocolate bar in a very good way
    • Laima – less nutty; not too sweet; chocolaty

Overall Impressions:

Kovas – The first thing I noticed is that overall, they are pretty much a uniform color; probably from dates being the primary ingredient. Only the Chocolate Brownie bar was markedly different. These were, to a bar, good-tasting, felt like they were made of quality ingredients, and as my son Teo noted, if you were vegan you would want to eat these all day long! Simple ingredients, simple packaging, a product I am happy to recommend!

Laima – I like that they’re organic and have protein. Also not too sweet overall compared to other energy bars. I will definitely buy for the kids and myself as treats rather than candy bars or other energy bars.

  1. very cool giveaway. you wouldn't know it from all the chocolate I got for Christmas, but I'm really going to watch my sugar intake next year.

  2. I'm going to lift weights and do pylometrics 2ce a week even if I moan and groan all the way down to the gym. Also, my husband is entertaining a daily running streak for 2011 and I might join him- (at least) 1 mile a day for as many days as we possibly, humanly can.

  3. I'm going to stop drinking so much soda and get back to drinking more water.

Love that your kids have a blog. Kids writing makes me happy. 🙂 I'm heading to check it out now!

  4. I have heard just great things about PureBar! I loved your review and thought it was great to hear your take and Laima's (cool name by the way) take on the bars!
This year, aside from my tri training, I'm going to really try to incorporate more strength training activities. I'm really interested in the whole TRX system, so that is definitely something new I'd like to try out!

  5. Chocolate Brownie?
    Chocolate Brownie.
    Chocolate Brownie!!

2011 Will be a healthier year because I have learned so much about the foods I used to eat, and all the ones I still do. I look forward to working on my mad jogging skills and I look forward to kicking Jillians Butt by doing level 2. Boh Yah!

  6. 2011 – continue forward with my Diet Coke abstinence; only mention my heel every 3rd post; post at least once a month; only complain about how cold the pool is for 5 minutes prior to getting in it; use half as many exclamation marks in my posts!!; join my own Biggest Loser club I start up next week at school for the faculty….and last, but not least, help a friend run his first 50mile, which will be the highlight of my year. I might even run one in Madison, too!

I am upping my protein and downing my calorie intake for the next 12 weeks so will check out the nutritional contents of those bars. Do you think I can get them at Sunflower Market or Whole Foods? (Sunflower is a mini version of WF, but with prices considerably less).

Good luck mortgage shopping today!!! 🙂
    (those damn exclamation marks!)

  7. I'm going to sing in the shower more, because singing has been proven to make you happier and healthier. My shower has no parallel surfaces either, so the natural room reverb is really nice. And I'll cut back on Ice Cream too.

  8. Just checked out your kids' site–too cool! Would love to try these bars.

I am making 2011 healthier by refining my strength training regime. Been too lazy with it and have some definite weaknesses that will become strengths in the coming year!

  9. 2011 is going to be healthier for me in a mental way so to speak. Marathon Makeover in it's inaugural year here in North Dallas and seeing people's lives changed will continue to motivate and inspire me to keep up my training at this pace.

2011 will be more about how I can help others.

  10. Sound a lot like Larabars, and those are great too. Even if I don't win, I think I'll order some to try. As for healthy in 2011, I plan to keep running.

  11. They all sound good.

This will be an amazing year of eating the cleanest I have in many. It will be a daily regemin of veggies, fish and chicken, grains and fruit. beef and pork will be almost non existant.

  12. Hi Kovas,
Mmm, did someone say wild blueberry and chocolate brownie? Sounds good:)

Starting January first I am going to be making many changes. I will be more consistent with my training and eating cleaner that ever!! I am excited and looking forward to 2011!

    Happy New Year Kovas!

  13. Great giveaway! How I plan to make 2011 healthier for me…

    ~less meat – this is a big deal becauseI am a meat-a-saurus

    ~more veggies and healthy carbs

~continue core work and strength training

~make a point of not sweating the small stuff

  14. May Canadians enter? One way I'll make 2011 a healthier year for me is by learning to snowshoe – I have a tendency to get quite a bit of exercise over the summer and then spend the winter on the couch with a book.

  15. I love PureBars, especially the Cherry Cashew! I have been committed to a lifestyle of health and wellness for almost five years now, but other factors in my life can affect how well I stick to my own rules. In 2011 I am committing to the discipline I know I'm capable of: sticking to a mostly raw food diet, keeping as coffee a once-a-month treat, and keeping general unhealthy indulgences (pizza is my weakness) to only a few times a month.

  16. In 2011 I am going to cook as many organic and vegetarian meals as possible. No more awfull dead pigs, cows and chickens! My 6 year old son already does not want to eat “killed” animals and wished there were no killed animals to eat.

  17. I plan to be working out more this year with my son who is a personal trainer. I want to eating healthier a regular part of my life. I have not tried Pure Bars, but they sound fantastic!

  18. I just stumbled upon this blog, and what a time to do so! I love PURE bars. As far as my health-related 2011 resolutions, I'd like to lose about 5 pounds and get into some serious running shape. A half-marathon by summertime would be amazing!

  19. This is going to be a healthier year for me! Excited about what's to come. Walking everyday, healthy snacks(purebar) & not letting things get in my way.I work alot on the road and it's easy to stop for fast food. Packing a heathy lunch now. Already feeling better. You are what you eat and I want to be more than a pile of fat!! Good fuel for my body! WooHoo!!

  20. Yes it will be a healthier year for SUAR as I learn how to not break bones while running and I wow the posse with my new swimsuits.

I wonder how these compare to Lara bars? Sort of the same concept with minimal ingredients and dates galore. Love to try them.

  21. Definitely going to incorporate more cross-training into my schedule. Currently I'm a runner, but plan on doing more weight training and bicycling this year.

  22. My healthy commitment for 2011? Stay active, have fun with fitness, push myself this year (with racing)and eat as clean as I can.
I am really intrigued by these bars and will def check to see if I can find them locally. I love Larabars so this seems like a nice alternative.

Love having Laima on board with the reviews now!!
