Skin Care for the Great Outdoors

As outdoors people, we face a lot more inclement weather (heck, more weather period) than the average person. Yet most of us don’t give much thought to protecting one of our most vital organs, the skin. The skin keeps our other organs inside our bodies, protects us from germs and other nasties, sheds the elements (to a point), and is the conduit for feeling actual touch, heat, and cold. Pretty amazing. It does, however, need protection, from the sun, from pests, and from being in the outdoors itself. Over the last  year or so, I’ve collected samples from companies that do an outstanding job with their products in preventing or repairing damage. Here are some recommendations.

Skin Care for the Great Outdoors

Preventative/Recovery: Based in Wyoming, trilipiderm® is made tough.  According to the company, “trilipiderm® restores essential lipids and rebuilds the protective barrier that maintains your skin’s vital moisture balance.” The products are made in the U.S. using natural oils from Meadowfoam, Abyssinian, Jojoba, and more, along with Olive Squalene and plant-derived Beta-Sitosterol to make skin soothers and nourishers. I’ve been using the All-Body Moisture Retention Crème, both in original and the Broad Spectrum SPF 30 with Vitamin D for a few months now, spanning our harsh Winter through Spring and now into the heat of Summer. I feel like my skin looks and feels better than it has in a long time.

Curing: Earth’s Care  has become my go-to when I have skin issues outside of the hand area. The company believes in using ingredients from nature for their products (all manufactured or bottled in the USA), such as essential and carrier oils, botanicals, beeswax, flowers and so on. This is definitely in line with my own philosophy of minimizing chemicals and artificial ingredients as much as possible. The three samples I used most were the Tea Tree Oil Balm, Dry & Cracked Skin Balm, and the Anti-Itch cream – these samples feel like they are hard core in terms of effectiveness and an added bonus is that they all smell great, at least to me. While you could use these as a daily skin regimen, I felt they were better in more dire circumstances.

Curing: Most of us use our hands a lot outdoors, maybe none more so than climbers in terms of abuse. It makes sense that a skin care company geared towards climbers would have an effective product to protect and repair hand skin health. Skin Nourishment says “If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin”™. Love that. One of their products, climbOn!  has, according to the company, “physical properties… [that] include analgesic, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antitoxic, cicatrizant (wound healing), insecticide, vulnerary, bactericidal, astringent, stimulates white corpuscles, and more.” Holy Cow. The great part is that they replay work – I also appreciate that it comes either as a creme or bar (something I hadn’t seen before, but makes it easy to control how much of it you put on your skin).

All these items started as samples, but I’ve been using them regularly now for a minimum of 6 months, which shows much I believe in them. All highly recommended.
