Sunshine in a bottle
I love lanterns when camping – something about the light extending the day and allowing activities to continue. Practicality aside, I appreciate ending the day with a good book before heading into the tent/car/cabin.
I was therefore excited that SONNENGLAS reached out to me about reviewing their jar lantern. This is a super simple set-up: a mason jar has a lid that contains four solar-powered LEDs, which are charged by solar cells in its lid. So, while you’re out hiking/fishing/hunting, the sun is charging your lantern for you. The lantern is turned on using a unique magnetic switch, which is easy for adults and safe for kids. It saves energy, is environmentally friendly and fun.
This high-tech product from South Africa is handmade by 50 previously unemployed men and women from the townships Alexandra and Soweto. Very cool product in its own right and its origins are even better – developed for people in areas without electricity, now we get to support that mission, the jobs it creates, and a beautifully simple product we all can use.
We’ve brought this on a bunch of trips and I used it for several hours eating dinner and reading a book while camping at Shabbona Lake State Park. I love the look of the lantern and the feel of the soft glow that emanates from it.
The lantern is made with 70% local materials, the jar itself is 100% recyclable, and can be replaced should you inadvertently break it.
Since it’s an empty jar, you can personalize your SONNENGLAS any way you. Fill it with s’mores fixings, matches and firestarters for the campfire, or whatever suits your whims and needs – there are endless possibilities. Just use your imagination.
The SONNENGLAS jar lantern is solar-powered, saves energy, is environmentally friendly and fun.
