“Your life does not
get better by chance,
it gets better by change.”
~ Jim Rohn
Every morning, I walk down to Lake Michigan, look East and West, and take a photo of the rising sun (well, not yesterday morning…yesterday morning it was snowing and there wasn’t much of a sun rise…snowing…April 9th!). After that, I choose a different path each day to get back home. Since this neighborhood is built on and amongst the dunes, I’ve been getting a good workout hiking up and down them. Great training for this Fall’s Iceland trekking, though that should be much more flat, I believe.
It’s not easy for many people to make changes, but I really relish the opportunities to start afresh, especially when there’s an obvious benefit like living in a much more natural, beautiful place. The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (along with the Indiana Dunes State Park) will truly open up the opportunities for adventuring.
It takes me about 5 minutes or less to wander down to the lakefront, and soon (soon?!) warmer paddling weather will have me out there on the water. Not just on the water, however, but in it as well. Just yesterday I found out that there is a shipwreck just off the coast of the Park where it is permissible to snorkel. Cannot wait!
Cycling will make a return as well, as there are many more safe opportunities to take the road bike out, including many dedicated bike paths, with more planned for the near future. I’m also just a few minutes away by car from some interesting mountain bike trails at Imagination Glen, really looking forward to getting onto those soon.
Over the years, I’ve made vows to be more active, to lose weight, to regain my fitness. This life change is a perfect opportunity to make it a lifestyle and not just an attempt. Looking forward to fitting into clothing better, feeling less ashamed of taking my shirt off, but mostly to feeling good.
Expect to see a lot more adventure posts, gear reviews, and yes, finally yes, the dawning of a new podcast age with the arrival of Midwest Basecamp – An Outdoors Podcast.
